Dos and Don’ts of IBS

When someone is diagnosed with IBS then naturally, one of the first things they are going to do is look for information on the various treatment options that are available, as well as information on how to cope with IBS on a day to day basis.

As IBS is so complex and affects different people in different ways, the information can be confusing and misleading. For example, some foods that are listed as suspect as far as IBS is concerned may have no affect on one person and yet will set off severe symptoms in someone else; the same thing goes for medication. Treatment of IBS is very much dependent on the individual symptoms so will vary quite significantly from person to person.

The following list of dos and don’ts and will help you make the right choices and put you on track to coping with your IBS.

List of Dos

  • First you have to identify what, if any, foods are triggering your IBS symptoms and the best way to do this is to keep a food diary for a couple of weeks, noting down any effect they have on your symptoms. By doing this you can eliminate suspect foods and possibly obtain some relief.
  • Try to increase the amount of soluble fibre in your diet. Stay away from bran as this has been shown to make the symptoms of IBS worse.
  • Drink plenty of water. Water is essential for efficient bowel movements regardless of whether you have constipation or diarrhoea predominant IBS.
  • Eat smaller portions at mealtimes, eat regularly and try to ensure that mealtimes are stress free.
  • Reduce the amount of stress in your life by trying to spend some time each day taking time for yourself. Stress and anxiety are known to make IBS symptoms worse so find ways to relax and unwind at the end of a busy day. You could also try some relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation.
  • Talk to your partner, your friends and loved ones about your IBS, if you have their support you will find it easier to cope.

List of Don’ts

  • Don’t diagnose yourself with IBS. The symptoms of IBS can mimic other conditions which require specialist treatment so make sure you get a proper diagnosis from a qualified medical professional.
  • Try not to become too preoccupied with your symptoms and the way that your body is working. Focusing too much on every single response that your body has will only increase your perception of pain and discomfort.
  • Never give in to the temptation to overeat as this will put pressure on your digestive system and make your IBS worse.
  • Don’t starve yourself either; the key here is a balanced diet and regular meals.
  • Don’t isolate yourself. Try not to avoid social situations or intimacy because you are afraid you may need the toilet suddenly or if you suffer from embarrassing wind.

Although IBS is a long term condition that is likely to last a lifetime, that doesn’t mean you have to give up. IBS isn’t dangerous and doesn’t lead to other more serious conditions. Many people find ways of alleviating their symptoms to the point that they have little or no impact on their lives at all.  Studies are shedding new light on this condition all the time so even though there is no cure at present, the future looks promising.
