Natural Cure for IBS

IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a disorder of the gastro-intestinal system that is characterised mainly by abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhoea or constipation or both. There is no one single identifiable cause of IBS and no single treatment for it either. Consequently, a natural cure for IBS, if indeed such a thing exists, involves dealing primarily with the symptoms, which if dealt with effectively, can provide some relief from IBS.

If you have been diagnosed with IBS, then the chances are it will continue intermittently throughout your life. However, this doesn’t mean that you cannot find a way to dramatically reduce the symptoms of IBS and regain control over your life and your bowel habits. For example, there are various medications that can help deal with troublesome symptoms although it’s important to note that this doesn’t “cure” IBS.

Probably the most important step you can take is to start by looking at your diet and identifying and eliminating foods and drinks that exacerbate your IBS and this may be enough to make a significant difference.  Stress is also a known trigger that has an impact on the digestive system so it’s important to avoid stressful situations.

IBS doesn’t affect everyone in the same way so each person’s experience of IBS will be unique but the following steps can help you identify a natural way to deal with your IBS.

Identify food intolerances

In the first instance, it is advisable that you keep a detailed diary or record of all foods and drinks that you consume over a period of several weeks and any noticeable effect that these foods have on your bowel movements.  In doing this you can identify substances that make your IBS worse, and identify others that appear to have no effect on your digestive system and then make the necessary changes to your diet.

Natural ways to deal with IBS

  • Drink plenty of water, at least 2 litres a day. Adequate water is even more essential if you increase the amount of fibre in your diet
  • Increase the amount of natural fibre in your diet by way of fruits and vegetables and wholegrain breads and pasta (the ones that don’t have a negative impact on your digestive system) and perhaps soluble fibre like Ispaghula husk.
  • Reduce the amount of tea, coffee, alcohol, and chocolate in the diet and cut down or stop smoking
  • Learn how to relax, unwind and take time for yourself to enable you to cope better with stress and worry. If you are depressed, have emotional problems or are excessively anxious and worried, seek help from your doctor. Some form of counselling or talking therapy may be helpful.

Natural Preparations

  • IntestAidB - a natural dietary supplement based on nucleotides, which play an important role in repairing the gut and promoting a healthy balance of bacteria.
  • Probiotics – found in some yoghurts and drinks, can help restore the optimum balance of bacteria in the gut
  • Peppermint – can help combat indigestion and relax the stomach muscles so reduce the pain associated with stomach cramps
  • Ginger – has been found to help a number of digestive problems from painful cramps to nausea

As with any medicine, natural or otherwise, there can be contra indications and nasty side effects so before taking anything at all, seek advice from your doctor first.
