Cleansing IBS

If you have been diagnosed with IBS or irritable bowel syndrome, then you will probably be keen to find ways of finding relief. Unfortunately, there is no set treatment plan for IBS so it’s simply a case of identifying what works for you and what doesn’t. For some people with IBS, making certain dietary and lifestyle changes are enough to give them relief whereas others may find that their symptoms are severe enough to warrant the help of medication to enable them to cope on a daily basis. There are also those who proclaim the benefit of colon cleansing for IBS, particularly when suffering from constipation predominant IBS.

When we are constipated, waste can build up in the intestines which can result in bloating, flatulence and of course a build up of toxins in the body. Toxins can impair health in general and reduce energy levels, which is why many people resort to detoxifying their body in an attempt to get well again. This will involve cleansing the colon in some way.

What is colon cleansing?

One common way to cleanse the colon is to take a concoction of different herbs that together will help to clean out and empty the gut. Then of course you would have to replenish the good bacteria in order to restore the balance of microflora in the gut.
Another way to cleanse the colon involves a more invasive procedure of inserting a tube into the rectum and flushing the colon out with water. This technique is also known as colonic irrigation.

Colon cleansing is controversial. On the one hand we have those who tell us that it is as important to cleanse the colon as it is to keep other parts of the body clean and on the other we have those who tell us that colon cleansing is not necessary for anyone and can actually make things a lot worse, particularly so where IBS is concerned.

The idea is that people with IBS already have a sensitive gut that is already over reactive so to resort to something that is going to stimulate the gut even more is perhaps not such a good idea. There are, however, some very natural ways to cleanse the colon and help rid your body of toxins and in a way that will not make your IBS worse, only better.

Natural cleansing for IBS

Diet

Eat a healthy diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grain cereals. Increase the amount of soluble fibre in the diet. Eliminate digestive stimulants such as tea, coffee, chocolate, carbonated drinks and alcohol.

Exercise

Exercise helps to speed up the metabolism and increase blood flow throughout the body. It also helps to reduce stress levels and will enable your digestive system to function more efficiently to remove any build up of toxins from the body.

Water

Most people just do not drink enough water on a daily basis. We all need around 2 litres of fluids a day for our bodies to work efficiently, even more than that if you are extremely active.

Long term prognosis

Although IBS is not life threatening in any way and will not lead to other more serious conditions, there is currently no cure for it and the symptoms are likely to persist on a long term basis.

Stress is known to make IBS worse so reducing the amount of stress in your life is an important consideration. Interestingly, although IBS can affect anyone, including children, there is a much lower incidence of IBS in people who live relatively stress free lives.
