Constipation and IBS

When constipation is the predominant symptom of IBS, then dietary changes could help. In persistent cases, the occasional use of mild laxatives might bring some relief; however, laxatives can also increase abdominal cramps and spasms and of course associated pain so isn’t a long term solution.

Constipation is characterised by abdominal pain and infrequent stools, which can be hard and dry in form and texture. It is always best to try and find natural ways to bring relief rather than to resort to the use of medications as a first resort to treat constipation, particularly for children. However, some form of laxative may be necessary on occasions.

Medication for Constipation

There are several different types of laxatives and stool softeners available to treat IBS constipation:

  • Fibre type laxatives (such as one containing Ispaghula hulk)
  • Stimulant type laxatives (such as those containing Senna) help stimulate the bowels – not recommended for long term use for IBS due to the increase in stomach cramps
  • Osmotic laxatives such as Lactulose can help soften the stools and make them easier to pass
  • Emollient type laxatives that act as stool softeners, for example, Docusate Sodium and Docusate Calcium
  • Lubricant laxatives like liquid paraffin and mineral oil coat the stools and can help keep the stools soft and easier to pass
  • Saline laxatives such as Magnesium salts and sodium phosphate, which basically work by drawing water into the colon and increasing the volume of stools which increases pressure and the urge to defecate

Treating Constipation Predominant IBS

In the first instance, try increasing the amount of roughage in the diet in the form of fresh fruit, vegetables, wholemeal bread and grains, along with drinking plenty of water to keep the stools soft and moist.  It is also worth noting that increasing the amount of fibre (particularly unprocessed bran) in the diet might also make other symptoms of IBS worse, such as abdominal discomfort and bloating.

Making sure you get enough fluids in the diet is absolutely essential, particularly if taking any laxatives as laxatives and bulk forming agents absorb water so if there is not enough liquid in the diet, (at least 2 litres a day) then the stools can become harder, bulkier and more difficult to pass.

Get plenty of exercise to keep the body healthy and of course the bowels functioning effectively.

Keep a record of what you eat and drink each day and the effect that it has on your bowel movements for a few weeks so that you can spot which foods help and which ones hinder and take steps to eliminate the foods that make your constipation worse.

Any treatment plan for IBS will be very much an individual affair. People react differently to various foods and drinks and the same diet or treatment plan will not work for everyone. There is no cure for IBS so treatment means managing the symptoms as best you can and finding a way that works for you.
