Diarrhoea Predominant IBS
According to research, around 50% of people with IBS developed their symptoms after a major life changing event which would certainly suggest that there is a psychological element to it. Up to 20% of people with IBS develop symptoms after acute gastroenteritis, suggesting that there is a physiological aspect to it. In the remaining 30% or so there is no identifiable trigger. However, it is known that some foods can make the symptoms of IBS worse and that stress is a significant trigger factor.
All in all, IBS is an unpredictable disorder that can and does affect people in different ways. Some may have constipation and bloating as their main symptom and yet others may find that persistent diarrhoea and abdominal pain is the most troublesome aspect of their IBS. Some also find that they alternate between bouts of constipation and bouts of diarrhoea.
Quite often, people with diarrhoea predominant IBS feel a sense of urgency to move their bowels in the morning (the morning rush) and will perhaps go several times before it eases off throughout the day. Others may find that their diarrhoea is so bad that they are anxious about going out or meeting appointments or even travelling anywhere in case they have a sudden urge to go. In severe cases, individuals may feel housebound and isolated. Any anxiety about the symptoms of IBS will no doubt carry some stress which in turn will make the symptoms worse and a vicious circle begins.
There is no one pattern that affects everyone so it is important to establish how your IBS affects you and your lifestyle. If diarrhoea is the most dominant symptom in your IBS then there are a number of ways to help alleviate the problem.
Treating Diarrhoea
- Try reducing intake of tea, coffee and other drinks containing caffeine and the switch to a low fat diet. Identify what other foods or drinks make the diarrhoea worse and eliminate them from the diet. The best way to do this is to keep a food diary for a couple of weeks and note any significant changes in bowel movements.
- Stop or cut down on smoking. Smoking can increase bowel activity and make the diarrhoea worse
- Anti-diarrhoeal agents such as Loperamide (Imodium) may help. This works by decreasing the frequency of bowel movements and improving the form and texture of the stools. Once you have worked out your optimum dose, you can take it on a regular basis.
- Avoid situations that are likely to increase the amount of stress in your life. Stress is a normal part of life but in IBS sufferers, stress is known to exacerbate the symptoms. Learn relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga, and make sure you get into a regular sleeping pattern
- Sometimes anti-depressants are prescribed to help ease the symptoms of IBS. Trycyclic anti depressants for example can help reduce the number of bowel movements
- It is vital that you drink plenty of water, at least 2 litres a day, as this is will help to replace body fluids and ensure that you don’t become dehydrated
