Hydrocodone IBS

IBS is a disorder affecting the digestive tract and can be a painful and distressing condition. The main symptoms associated with IBS are abnormal frequency of bowel movements, for example, more than three times a day or less than three times a week, abnormal stool consistency, and abdominal spasms and cramps for which some form of pain relief may be necessary.

What is Hydrocodone?

Hydrocodone or dihydrocodeinone is a powerful narcotic analgesic used for pain relief and works by binding to the Opioid receptors in the central nervous system. Trade names include Vicodin, Anexsia, Lorcet, Vicoprofen, Hycodan, and Norco amongst others.

What are the side effects associated with Hydrocodone?

As with any drug there are side effects, some of which can be more serious than others. The following are commonly reported side effects of Hydrocodone.

Drowsiness
Dizziness
Dry mouth
Nausea, vomiting
Muscle twitches
Sweating
Decreased urination
Loss of libido
Constipation

Hydrocodone is highly addictive so withdrawal effects are felt if Hydrocodone is stopped suddenly. It also interacts with alcohol and increases drowsiness and dizziness and interacts negatively with many other drugs including monoamine oxidase inhibitors, antihistamines, and muscle relaxants. Hydrocodone is not recommended during pregnancy as the effect on the unborn baby is unknown.

It is essential that the dose is taken exactly as prescribed and that the dose is not exceeded. The young and the elderly are possibly more likely to suffer from side effects so in these age groups the dosage may be lower.

What are the contraindications of Hydrocodone?

You should inform your doctor of any medical condition you have including if you have any history of alcohol or drug abuse, liver or kidney disease, if you suffer from asthma or allergies, if you have epilepsy, thyroid problems, an enlarged prostrate or gallbladder disease. It is also important to inform your doctor of any other medications you are taking, including over the counter preparations or health remedies in order to establish any possibility of negative interactions between them.
