IBS Products
If you have been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome or IBS as it is commonly known, then some dietary modifications or lifestyle changes will be necessary in order to alleviate the symptoms.
There is no cure for IBS although in most people, the symptoms will come and go at different times and can be made worse by stress or when certain trigger foods are consumed. The problem with treating IBS is that there isn’t a single treatment as no two people will be affected by IBS in the same way so any treatment will depend very much on what symptoms are giving the most trouble and dealing with them first.
It is the same with products designed to treat IBS, one product that suits one IBS sufferer is not necessarily the one that will suit another. The first step is to be aware of how your IBS affects you and then you can deal with the symptoms that give you the most bother. Some of the more common preparations and medicines used to treat IBS are as follows:
Laxatives
There are many laxatives and stool softeners available for occasional use but it isn’t advisable to use laxatives on a regular basis so in the first instance it may be wise to try increasing the amount of fibre in the diet. However, stay away from bran as a source of fibre as this has been found to make the symptoms worse. Soluble fibre in the form of fresh fruits and vegetables, oats, barley and wholemeal bread are much better tolerated. You could also try a soluble fibre supplement such as Ispaghula husk.
Anti diarrhoea preparations
There are many different types available but Loperamide is probably the one most often used to treat diarrhoea predominant IBS. It works by improving the form and consistency of the stool and reduces the number of bowel movements.
Tricyclic anti-depressants
A low dose of these anti-depressants has been found to help IBS sufferers. The dose is too low to have an anti-depressant effect but is high enough to help promote healthy bowel movements.
Antispasmodic agents
These can help when stomach spasms and cramps are painful. Examples include Mebeverine and Alverine.
Probiotics
Found in some yoghurts and drinks. Probiotics may help maintain the balance of friendly bacteria in the gut.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
Some studies have shown that Chinese herbal medicines can reduce the symptoms of IBS.
Artichoke Leaf Extract
Several studies have indicated that artichoke leaf extract might help normalise bowel movements and reduce the severity of IBS symptoms.
Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil can produce some adverse reactions in some people but research has also shown it can help reduce painful spasms and ease indigestion.
Important
Before taking any medication for IBS, it is essential that you speak to your doctor, initially for an accurate diagnosis but also to rule out any other contributing factors and to identify any contraindications of any medication you are taking, including herbal preparations and over the counter remedies that don’t require a prescription.
