IBS Tomato

Nutrition in general is inevitably going to play an important part in any treatment plan for IBS. Indeed, once you have received a proper diagnosis, the first thing to look at is diet. Many different types of foods have been found to trigger off symptoms of IBS. These include tomatoes, fatty foods, citrus fruits, lactose, caffeine, alcohol and dairy products. However, what is true for one person isn’t necessarily true for someone else.

Can tomatoes make my IBS worse?

Tomatoes are members of the deadly nightshade family which is considered toxic. However, the reality appears to be that tomatoes actually offer significant nutritional benefits. The difficulty with any treatment for IBS is that no two people are likely to present with the same symptoms, with the same degree of severity, or the same type of food intolerances and sensitivities. One person may find that tomatoes exacerbate their IBS symptoms whereas another may have no problem with them at all. If you find you cannot tolerate tomatoes then simply eliminate them from your diet.

Nutritional value of tomatoes

Tomatoes on the other hand can play an important part in a healthy eating plan. They contain vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and a small amount of iron. They are also high in antioxidants. Antioxidants are cancer busting chemicals which basically destroy free radicals which if left to roam free can damage cells in the body.

Tomatoes are also natural probiotics and as such can be an excellent part of a healthy balanced diet.

One of the advantages of including tomatoes in your diet is that their nutritional value isn’t depleted by cooking.

How to boost nutrition and alleviate symptoms of IBS

There are a number of ways to improve nutrition in general and obtain some relief from the discomfort of IBS.

  • Eliminate any foods that irritate your digestive tract
  • Increase the amount of soluble fibre in your diet and avoid insoluble fibre like Bran
  • Drink at least a litre and half to two litres of water per day (particularly important if you increase the amount of fibre in your diet)
  • Avoid fatty foods or foods that are extremely spicy
  • Cut down on alcohol, tea and coffee and stop smoking
  • Make sure there are plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet
  • Try to get regular exercise like walking or swimming, which will encourage healthy bowel movements
  • Avoid stress and situations which make you anxious as stress and anxiety is known to make the symptoms of IBS much worse
  • Take time to enjoy your meals. Mealtimes in particular should be stress free

Finally, although IBS is likely to be a lifelong condition, that doesn’t mean it’s going to be bad every day. The symptoms of IBS tend to come and go. By identifying foods that trigger your IBS symptoms and foods that appear to help, you can very quickly learn to cope with IBS and keep your symptoms under control. Indeed for many people some dietary and lifestyle changes may be the only treatment that is required.
